Things I’ve Learned from Sensei & Kyoshi
1. If it hurts when you do it, you’re probably doing it right. When your ankles hurt your angles are right.
2. When asked how something feels the answer is “GREAT’”
(or they’ll make you do it longer)
3. You must always be THERE, there is not time to GET there. Your attacker isn’t going to wait for you to get ready to defend yourself. ( or take your shoes off) You only have ONE chance.
4. Strike from the floor. Your entire body is your weapon, the arms & legs are just the accessories conveying the force.
5. Pull that other arm back! ( Every action has an equal & opposite reaction, duh! Newton 101!) The elbow is not your weapon , but it can be if you need it to.
6. Karate is all about YOU, not your opponent. You don’t know what they are capable of but you do know what you are capable of.
7. The first thing you should do is look for somewhere to RUN.
8. I have been given a wall, it needs to come with me wherever I go.
9. You need to look at the whole picture, not just what’s directly in front of you.
10. Just when you think you can’t go on……BREATHE!
11. There really ARE muscles in my ankles!
12. We train for progress and perfection, NOT points!
